Summit Generators • Standby Power Explained
What Happens to Your Standby Generator When the Power Comes Back On?
Your generator helped you through the outage. Here’s what happens when utility power returns.
The lights are back on across the neighborhood, but you can still hear your standby generator running. Is that normal? In many cases, yes. Returning your home to utility power is a controlled process, and shutting down is the final step.
For Houston-area homeowners, understanding that process takes some of the mystery out of backup power—whether you’re at home during an outage or away when it happens.
First, the system checks utility power
Your automatic transfer switch monitors the utility supply while the generator powers your home. When acceptable utility power returns, the system follows its programmed return-to-utility sequence. A delay helps avoid switching back too quickly if the restored supply is unstable.
The timing depends on your equipment and settings, so your generator may not stop the moment your neighbors’ lights come on.
Then, your home switches back
The automatic transfer switch transfers your home’s electrical load from the generator to the utility supply. With a properly operating automatic system, you don’t need to go outside and flip a switch.
A brief interruption may occur during the transfer, depending on your equipment. Automatic backup power does not necessarily mean uninterrupted power.
When should you call for service?
A short wait before shutdown can be normal. Contact a qualified generator technician if you notice:
- Your home remains without power after utility service is confirmed restored.
- A warning or fault message appears on the generator controller.
- The generator continues running beyond its documented transfer and cooldown sequence.
Note any displayed fault code and consult your owner’s manual. Leave transfer-switch adjustments and electrical troubleshooting to a qualified professional.
